Non-Profit Facility Grant

The BWL offers grants of up to $5,000 to qualifying nonprofit organizations with the purpose of improving the efficiency of their buildings. Priority is given to organizations that serve the income-qualified community. The intention is to reduce nonprofits’ electricity costs, allowing them to allocate more of their operating budget to community services. Funds are available until November 30, 2019 or until they become exhausted, whichever occurs first.*

Inquiries may be sent to

To qualify, organizations must provide BWL with a completed application executed by a representative with authority to do so. A BWL representative is available to provide support on how to correctly complete the application. The application must be completed for only one facility. However, a qualifying organization may submit more than one application if there are additional eligible buildings.

In compliance with State of Michigan Public Act 342, the grant program is funded through energy waste reduction surcharge payments made by BWL electric customers.

Qualifying Organizations

BWL accepts applications from organizations that:

  • Are 501(c)3 nonprofit organizations located within the BWL’s electric service territory, as well as churches with outreach programs for people with limited incomes
  • Own a facility that demonstrates a need for improvements, as well as organizations with long-term leases
  • Serve low-income populations, including the elderly, people with special needs, veterans, individuals and families with children
    • Low-income is defined as 200% of the 2018 Federal Poverty Level
  • Pay the utility bills for their facility
  • Currently occupy the facility, as well as facilities temporarily closed for renovation

The application must be completed for only one facility address. Applications for additional buildings may be submitted and considered separately. Submit your completed application to:
